Explore the many facets of the European Middle Ages
‘The Middle Ages are everywhere,’ the historian and medievalist Horst Fuhrmann once said. That’s because all kinds of medieval things have persisted into our own time and culture, meaning it is essential to explore the Middle Ages to understand our current world. The master’s degree programme in Medieval Studies is based on the approach that the numerous facets of the Middle Ages can only be understood as part of an interaction of various disciplines in the humanities. Here you will learn how to explore this era, which has characterised our modern world, beyond the perspectives of just one discipline.
In the master’s programme on Medieval Studies, you have the opportunity to pursue a specialisation by engaging with a range of disciplines within the humanities. The in-depth study of several disciplines allows you to gain a multi-perspective insight into the working methods and approaches of various fields within the humanities in a unique way, leading to an academically qualifying degree. The key learning outcomes of the master’s degree programme are the consolidation and specialisation of skills related to cultural studies with a historical perspective, as well as the development of your ability to conduct independent research – inside or outside of the university – and to develop modes of knowledge transfer. The skill of being able to transfer the approaches you have learnt that are specific to the humanities to other time periods and topics, and therefore being able to work in an interdisciplinary way across any era, is fundamental to this.
